木に向き合うことも、鮎釣りも、車も。好きになったら、とことん。そんな桂川 晃さんの「人」に迫ります。
His dream has been sawmilling since age ten.
Wood, ayu fishing, cars—once he loves something, he goes all in. This profile focuses on Akira Katsuragawa himself.
Since Age Ten
10歳の頃から、夢は「製材業」だった。
Since age ten, his dream was sawmilling.
子どもの頃から、将来やりたい仕事は製材業。そこから森林文化アカデミーへ進み、奈良では社寺仏閣の製材を経験しました。
「木を挽く」という仕事を知るほど、その奥深さに惹かれていく。桂川さんにとって製材は、単なる職業ではなく、ずっと追いかけてきたものです。
Even as a child, he knew he wanted to work in sawmilling. That interest led him to the Gifu Academy of Forest Science and Culture and later to Nara, where he experienced milling timber for temples and shrines.
For Katsuragawa, sawmilling is more than a job. It is something he has continued to pursue for years.
What Fascinates Him
一本の丸太に、正解はひとつじゃない。
There is never just one right answer in a log.
桂川さんが面白いと感じているのは、注文サイズに合わせてただ挽くことではありません。
木目、節、色、形を見ながら、「この丸太なら何を取るのが一番いいか」を考える。一本ごとに違う木と向き合い、その丸太が持つポテンシャルをどこまで引き出せるか。
そこに、製材の難しさと面白さがあります。
What fascinates him is not simply cutting timber to a specified size. He studies the grain, knots, color, and shape and asks what each log is best suited to become.
Every log is different. The challenge is to bring out as much of its potential as possible.
CURIOSITY
木を知るほど、桧だけでは足りなくなった。
The more he learns, the wider his curiosity grows.
様々な物件に携わる中で、「ここはこの堅い樹種が合う」「この空間なら桧より杉の方がいいかもしれない」と考えることが増えてきました。
そこから興味は桧だけにとどまらず、栗や杉などへ。少量ずつ在庫を持ち、天然乾燥も始めています。
製材を知れば知るほど、もっと木を知りたくなる。桂川さんの探究心は、少しずつ広がり続けています。
As he became involved in more projects, he started thinking beyond Hinoki: perhaps a harder species would suit one location, or cedar would fit another space better.
That curiosity has led him to begin handling chestnut, cedar, and other species as well. The more he learns about wood, the more he wants to know.
Vision for the Future
目指すのは、「木のスペシャリスト」。
His goal: to become a true timber specialist.
桂川さんが目指しているのは、ただ木を挽ける人ではありません。
「こんな木が欲しい」「こんな材料で建物をつくりたい」。そんな相談を受けたときに、「それなら任せてください」と言える存在。
特殊材でも、樹種でも、用途でも。「桂川に聞けば何とかなる」と思ってもらえるような、頼られる木のスペシャリストになることが目標です。
Katsuragawa does not simply want to be someone who can saw timber. He wants to be the person people turn to when they need a special species, an unusual size, or the right material for a particular project.
Why He Joined
木青連では、もっと人から学びたい。
At Mokuseiren, he wants to keep learning from people.
田口房国会長に声をかけてもらったことをきっかけに東濃木青会へ入会しました。
様々な業種、様々な経験を持つ人から話を聞けることが、新鮮で勉強になる。まだまだ分からないことだらけだからこそ、先輩たちからたくさん吸収したいと話します。

鮎釣りは全国大会を目指す
Aiming for the national ayu fishing competition
川も海もやりますが、特に好きなのが鮎釣り。全国大会を目指し、夏は仕事前にも仕事後にも川へ向かいます。
He enjoys both river and sea fishing, but ayu fishing is his true passion. He is aiming for the national competition and often heads to the river before and after work in summer.
車も「見る」より「走る」
Cars are for driving, not just admiring
車も大好きで、年に数回はサーキット走行へ。ドライブも楽しみます。好きなものには、とことん向き合う性格がここにも表れています。
He is also an enthusiastic car lover and drives on a racing circuit several times a year. The same all-in attitude shows up here, too.

その言葉だけでも、桂川さんがどれだけ木に惹かれてきたかが伝わってきます。
丸太を見て考える。違う樹種にも興味を持つ。もっと知りたいから学ぶ。そして、将来は「木のスペシャリスト」になりたい。
鮎釣りでは全国大会を目指し、車ではサーキットを走る。
好きになったら、とことん。
今回の取材を通して感じたのは、そんな桂川さんのまっすぐさでした。これからどんな木と出会い、どんな製材をしていくのか。今後が楽しみなフレッシュ会員です。
